Call Summary The Odessa Council for the Arts & Humanities is seeking applications from artists and designers interested in creating artwork for four electrical boxes along Golder Avenue at the intersections of Golder & 10th, Golder & 13th, Golder & 14th, and Golden & 22. This will be the fourth set of boxes to be covered, and the first set outside of Downtown. The completed boxes will be unveiled in Spring 2017. One artist or designer will be selected for this opportunity and will be paid an all-inclusive fee of $4000 to create the artwork. The project will create a unique and memorable visual statement that will highlight the expansion of Public Art in Odessa. We are seeking an artist or designer who will approach the boxes as a family of art works and can create a unified and artistically interesting body of work. The boxes will be wrapped with adhesive vinyl on which the art has been printed. |

Project Description The Odessa Council for the Arts & Humanities is a 501(c)3 non-profit dedicated to supporting and promoting the Arts in Odessa and Ector County through Cultural Tourism, Arts Education, and Arts Advocacy. This project will expand the original 12 traffic boxes that were commissioned in 2016. The chosen artist will be required to submit a design for four traffic utility boxes. The chosen artist will also be given works by authors who have been highlighted by the City's One Book Odessa program and will need to incorporate the works into their designs, either through adding text, or designs that are inspired by the text and the program. These four boxes should also be be considered an expansion of the original twelve boxes, as part of an 'outdoor gallery,' and should compliment those designs (images of which are in the Additional Resources) |
Artwork Goals This project will create a unique and memorable visual statement that will highlight the Public Art Program and pay homage to the rich literary environment in Odessa. |
Artwork Location Description The boxes are located on the western side of Odessa, near Odessa High School, and will be seen by much traffic, and many pedestrians. |

Artists applying as a team must split the allotted number of work examples between themselves. |
Selection Information |
Selection Process Applications will be reviewed by a panel of Odessa artists, residence, and business owners. Three finalists will be selected based on the criteria below. Finalists will be paid a stipend to develop a proposal and present to the panel. One artist or designer will be awarded based upon their proposal, presentation, and references. |
Selection Criteria The criteria for selection of the finalists are: Artistic Excellence as demonstrated by past work and shown in submitted materials. Understanding of the project and ability to create work that responds to the goals of the project. Ability to create a work that will be durable and easy to maintain for an expected life span of at least five years. |
