Call Summary Odessa Arts invites professional artists or artist teams to submit qualifications to design and fabricate a significant piece to enhance the entrance to the new downtown hotel and convention center on Fifth Street. This piece will be in addition to Odessa’s public art collection, which includes works by Amy Cheng, Pam Edwards, Joe Barrington, Matt Plummer, and the forthcoming ‘Odessa Spire,’ by Ray King. |
Budget Description The funds for this project are derived from Odessa Arts Public Art Budget & Private Investors The budget covers all project-related costs including but not limited to, project design, labor, fabrication, project management, materials, tools, subcontracted services, lighting (if it is an integral part of the particular artwork), travel to complete the artwork if necessary, shipping, delivery of the artwork to site and installation. Any expense that exceeds the contracted amount will be the artist’s responsibility. Odessa Arts, with the assistance of community stakeholders, will facilitate the entire art selection process up through coordination of the installation of all artwork on behalf of Odessa Arts and the private investors. |
Project Description Situated in downtown Odessa, the new $47 million, 217 room, 150,326 sq. ft. Marriott hotel and $30 million, 78,271 state of the art conference center is the anchor for the City of Odessa’s downtown revitalization project. The historic Ector Theater will be incorporated into the center, merging Odessa’s past with it’s future. The artwork will be situated at the entrance for the hotel, and should serve to welcome visitors, and to honor the Energy Industry, which is the primary economic driver for the community. Special consideration will be given to artists/projects that utilize kinetic elements. |

Artwork Location Description The piece will be situated at the entrance to the Marriott hotel on Fifth Street in Downtown Odessa, adjacent to the Conference Center and the refurbished Ector Theater. |
Site History The Hotel/Conference Center is located on the corner of 5th street and Texas Ave, adjoining the historic Ector Theater. The site was once a part of a depressed downtown area. Downtown Odessa is now being revitalized with new businesses, and landscape/architecture improvements. |
Eligibility This commission is open to all professional artists or artist teams with experience in similar such projects. All media will be considered. A professional artist is defined as a skilled practitioner in the original arts with an original self-conceptualized body of work, generally recognized by critics and peers as a professional possessing serious intent and ability. Subcontracts may be used and are defined as those providing technical implementation including but not limited to construction, fabrication and assembly for portions of a finished product under the direct supervision and control of an artist. Selection Information |
Selection Process Submissions by applicants will be reviewed by Committee to ensure that each application is legible, complete, and meets all requirements. The pool will be narrowed and then reviewed by the committee who will select a group of artists to produce artwork for the structure. |
Selection Criteria Artwork will be selected based on the following criteria: • Artist merit and technical expertise • Demonstrated successful, innovative and effective approach to public art projects of a similar scope • Ability to successfully execute a public art project in a culturally rich and complex area • Express interest in creating artwork for the opportunities presented by this request for qualifications |
