Call Summary The Mount Rainier Arts Commission (MRAC) is requesting Artist Qualifications to create a contemporary outdoor mural located at 3840 34th Street, Mount Rainier, MD. |
Budget Description Up to three finalists will be selected and given a $350 stipend to submit a design proposal for the project. One artist will be selected for this project and awarded $3,500 to complete the mural. The budget awarded must cover all expenses associated with the creation of the mural, which includes, but are not limited to fabrication, materials, wall preparation, and insurance. |
Project Description The MRAC is commissioning a site-specific painted mural for the side of the 34th street commercial building. The selected artist(s) will be expected to use appropriate materials to ensure the longevity of the mural for at least 10 years, including power washing prior to installation and applying an anti-graffiti coating (supplied by the City of Mount Rainier) upon completion. |
Artwork Goals The MRAC is looking for a unique artwork, that will enliven the experience of the community, to be located on the side of a one story commercial building. This project is committed to enhancing both visibility of the business district and the public's experience through the visual arts. We seek a project that will provide inspiration for public involvement in the arts while maintaining a commitment to quality and a positive impact on the community. |
Artwork Location Description The size of the area allocated for the mural is 12'W x 13 'H. The exterior side wall is brick and in good condition. The MRAC does not expect any significant wall preparation prior to the implementation of the mural. The building is located in the center of one of Mount Rainier's business districts, close to The Glut Food Coop, Sweet and Natural Vegan Foods, Joes Movement Emporium, and other popular local businesses. It is a walkable street and neighborhood, just a block from Rhode Island Avenue, a main thoroughfare into Washington, DC. |
Site History Mount Rainier is the historic Route 1 gateway community from Prince George’s County to Washington, DC at the District’s northeastern boundary. The City is approximately 1.7 square miles with a population of about 8,500 (as of the 2000 Census). Mount Rainier is primarily a residential community with 1,100 single family homes and three large apartment developments. Mount Rainier, part of the Gateway Arts District, is home to over 150 art studios that contribute to the enrichment of the community. Eligibility Submissions will be considered from artists or artist led teams, 18 years or older, who reside or hold studio space in Maryland, Northern Virginia, and the District of Columbia. |

Selection Information |
