| Call Summary Odessa Arts is seeking artists for the inaugural Basin 52 exhibit, to be displayed form October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2022. 52 works by 52 different West Texas artists will be exhibited in various city buildings across Odessa. These works should reflect the artist's impression of West Texas. The works will also be included in an exhibit catalog, and printed on a specialty card deck to be sold by local merchants. |
| Budget Description Budget reflects payment to artist to display artwork for the exhibit. Artist will retain the right to sell the original, provided they allow the piece to remain displayed until the end of the exhibit. |
| Project Description Odessa Arts is seeking to highlight the beauty of West Texas, and promote the talent of our local artists. Basin 52 will display 52 works by 52 different West Texas artists from October 1, 2021 to September 30, 2022 in various City of Odessa buildings. These works will also be highlighted in an exhibit catalog and printed on custom decks of playing cards to be sold by local merchants. Proceeds from the sale of the cards will go towards professional development opportunities for local artists and to our mural assistance program. |
| Artwork Goals Artwork should reflect the artist's impression of West Texas, and our local landmarks. Artists will be paid an honorarium of $50 for allowing Odessa Arts to exhibit the work. Artists are free to sell the originals provided the work is not removed from the exhibit prior to the close date. Artwork should be submitted in portrait orientation as the works will be printed on on playing cards as well. |
| Artwork Location Description The City of Odessa operates several buildings for various departments. Each one has available exhibit space, which will brighten the workspaces as well as making the spaces more inviting for visitors. |
| Eligibility Artists of any experience level from the following West Texas counties are eligible: Andrews, Brewster, Crane, Crockett, Culberson, Ector, Glasscock, Howard, Jeff Davis, Loving, Martin, Midland, Pecos, Presidio, Reagan, Reeves, Terrell, Upton, Ward, Winkler. Hung Framed Works Mats • The purpose of a mat is to protect a work of art and set it off from the frame. • Mats should always be acid-free board or archival board of rag and high alpha content, • Four ply and eight ply mats are standard in framing. • Mats should be neutral in color, white, off-white, light gray. Black is acceptable if it does not detract from the work. Brightly colored mats are seldom archival and rarely compliment a work. • Mats should have a sufficiently generous border to separate the print from the frame. Framing • Prints should never be placed directly against the glass. • Prints in the bins should be archivally matted and either shrink-wrapped or placed in archival polyethylene bags. • The purpose of the frame is to isolate the work of art from the wall without overwhelming • Generally speaking the baguette style of frame (also known as the presentation frame) is appropriate for most prints, drawings, and photographs. These frames are thin unobtrusive moldings of wood or metal in a variety of finishes and profiles. • Spacers, the thin strips of wood or plastic that separate a floating work from the glass, must always be used when a mat is not used to keep the work from direct contact with the glass. Hanging • When preparing a frame for hanging, the artist must use D Rings. • Sawtooth and wire hangers are not acceptable. When members submit works which Odessa Arts deems to be poorly framed or not archivally matted, the committee will call the artist and ask him/her to rectify the situation as such works may be removed from the gallery walls. Please make sure to create a unique name for each piece you submit. |

| Selection Process Submitted applications will be adjudicated by the Basin 52 selection committee. |
| Selection Criteria Artwork will be selected based on skill, subject matter, and aesthetics. Profanity, hate speech, and art that is not considered to be in good taste and appropriate will be rejected. |
