Call Summary BEAUTIFYING SUGAR LAND’S STREETS The City of Sugar Land is seeking artists to construct paint-ready, wooden, information boxes similar to a Little Library to be installed adjacent to inspirational messaging embedded in the sidewalk. Boxes will contain information for free mental health resources. Artists will then be commissioned separately to decorate the wooden boxes. |
Budget Description HONORARIUM Each artist or artist team will receive a $500 honorarium for construction of one box and delivery to Sugar Land. Five to eight boxes will be commissioned. |
Project Description A City of Sugar Land selection panel will review proposals and select artists or artist teams to construct a minimum of five wooden boxes to be displayed across the city. The selection panel will determine the specific location of each piece at a later date. |
Artwork Location Description LOCATION A minimum of five locations in the City of Sugar Land. Sites to be determined. DURATION Boxes will be removed after one to three years depending on condition, however, they may be removed at any time at the discretion of the City of Sugar Land. |
Eligibility • Both artists and hobbyists are encouraged to apply. • This opportunity is limited to Sugar Land-area and regional artists (living/working within 70-mile radius of Sugar Land, Texas). • Artists contributing to a team project will receive equal recognition for their artistic input. Division of the payment will be up to the team and must be specified in the application. • Staff members, board members, advisory board members, City Council members and/or family members of City of Sugar Land are ineligible to apply. |

Letter of Interest: 700 word maximum Letter of Interest: Include a description that outlines your accomplishments as an artist/woodworker. If you are a resident of Sugar Land or Fort Bend County, please let us know. If applying as a team, please submit a Letter of Interest for each artist, with the lead artist’s resume first. |
Artists are allowed to apply in teams.
Artists applying as a team must split the allotted number of work examples between themselves. |
Selection Information |
Selection Process When creating your design, please carefully consider the specifications provided below. Selected artists should be prepared to coordinate with the City of Sugar Land to finalize or revise their design. • This project is modeled after the Little Library project. See examples below. Additional examples are readily available online. • Submitted designs must not violate copyright restrictions. • Electronic submissions only via www.publicartist.org. Submissions sent by email or other method will not be reviewed. • Artists may submit up to three designs for consideration. • Artists must deliver their completed boxes to the City of Sugar Land as directed. |
Selection Criteria Criteria used to select artwork include, but are not limited to appropriateness of work to the community, aesthetic quality, site suitability, quality of previous work and commitment to carrying out the project. SPECIFICATIONS Boxes must • Not exceed 24” in height, 18” in width or 12” in depth. • Be able to store a stack of 9” x 4” brochures, small books and various pamphlets. Shelving is optional. • Have a door with a Plexiglas panel. Glass is not permitted. • Have a small ventilation hole covered with screening or other similar material to discourage insects. • Include an interior light powered by a solar panel. • Have reserved space on the exterior for a 2” x 6” sign to be provided by the city. • Be paint ready when completed. • Be easily attachable to an approximately 6” x 8” base. Boxes will stand on a 4” x 4” pole 3 feet above ground. Pole will be provided by the city. Completed artwork will become a part of the City of Sugar Land’s Public Art collection and will be owned by the City. Selected artists will sign a licensing agreement and participation waiver with the City of Sugar Land. |
