DAKOTA WESLEYAN WOMEN'S SCULPTURE PROJECT

THIS CALL HAS CLOSED.

Budget: $35,000
Activated: 08/26/2021
Deadline: 10/01/2021

Call Summary
The Dakota Wesleyan University (DWU) Class of 1970 is leading the effort to commission a meaningful suitable sculpture to be placed in front of DWU's newly constructed School for Business, Innovation and Leadership.

Budget Description
$35,000 maximum amount to be paid to the artist, to include the completed sculpture, its foundation or base (if required), delivery to the DWU campus, and installation at the site. The three final artists will each receive a $500 stipend to create a required maquette model of his/her proposed work. Selected artist must state in his/her proposal whether a deposit is needed to proceed with creating the work, the $ amount required, and when it must be paid.

Project Description
This call is for a commissioned work for a new building on campus. The work will be located in the outside area in front of the building so must be created of durable and permanent material(s). (The approximate area is marked by white X in the headline photo on this call.) Stone, bronze, mosaic, stainless steel, other metal, and/or all other suitable material(s) will be considered. All forms of three dimensional work will be considered and may be realistic or abstract, but should be representative of the goal in some way. It can be freestanding or on some kind of foundational structure. DWU staff will prepare the display site and assist with installation and lighting where necessary. Suggestions from the artist in these areas are welcome and DWU staff will work with the artist to achieve the best display of the work.

Artwork Goals
The goal of this project is to honor the work of women of Dakota Wesleyan and others from the past and present - and to encourage and support current and future women students. The sculpture will add to the landscape and culture of the university and be a symbolic reminder of the contributions of women in all professions and areas of work.

Artwork Location Description
DWU is a a small private liberal arts college with 950 students located in Mitchell, South Dakota (area population about 17,400). The sculpture is to be placed outside in an area in front of the entrance to the new DWU School of Business, Innovation and Leadership (area marked by the white X on the headline photo of the building on this call.) The work can be placed on a pedestal or on some kind of foundation but the work needs to be of the scale of a larger outdoor “public” work that is easily visible.

Site History
The building is new construction and the area where the work will be is open and visible to the interior and exterior areas of the campus. See construction and other campus information at: https://www.dwu.edu/about-dwu/directions-to-campus/campus-map/school-of-business-innovation-and-leadership
