Call Summary Ector County Independent School District and Odessa Arts invite professional artists or artist teams to submit qualifications to design, fabricate & install a mural to celebrate the centennial of the school district. |
Budget Description The budget covers all project-related costs including but not limited to, project design, labor, fabrication, project management, materials, tools, subcontracted services, lighting (if it is an integral part of the particular artwork), travel to complete the artwork if necessary, shipping, delivery of the artwork to site and installation. Any expense that exceeds the contracted amount will be the artist’s responsibility. Odessa Arts & ECISD will facilitate the entire art selection process up through coordination of the installation of all artwork on behalf of ECISD. |
Project Description ECISD will be celebrating its centennial from September 2021 though May 2022. As part of the celebrations, the district would like to commission a mural to represent the achievements of the past, while pointing towards the promise of the future. The work should be prominent and proportional to its surroundings, (and should last for 20 years), and should hold up to the extreme weather conditions of West Texas including intense sunlight, heat and wind for at least/up to 20 years with minimal maintenance. Artist will be asked to work with ECISD art students in the execution of the mural. |
Artwork Goals ECISD is committed to using this opportunity to enhance Public Art in Odessa and continue the objectives of the Public Art Master Plan for the City of Odessa. ECISD & Odessa Arts seek works by professional artists to add to and integrate with the City of Odessa and its growing collection of public art. This piece should: 1. Meet the needs of the community 2. Reflect a quality that will stimulate and engage the community 3. Reflect a quality that will enhance the reputation of Odessa to the external art community 4. Reflect a quality that will enhance the reputation of Odessa, making it an arts destination 5. Allow the community to use artwork as an example of exceptional public art 6. Be durable, sustainable and easy to maintain |
Artwork Location Description This mural will be located on the north facing wall of the ECISD development office on the corner of 10th and Golder. The wall measures 18’ high by 62’ long (1116 sq. ft.) and includes a mid-century architectural feature measuring 32.5’ high that could be incorporated into the final design. |
Eligibility This public art commission is open to all professional artists or artist teams with experience in similar such projects. All media will be considered. A professional artist is defined as a skilled practitioner in the original arts with an original self-conceptualized body of work, generally recognized by critics and peers as a professional possessing serious intent and ability. Subcontracts may be used and are defined as those providing technical implementation including but not limited to construction, fabrication and assembly for portions of a finished product under the direct supervision and control of an artist. Applications not meeting eligibility criteria will be withdrawn from consideration. All applications must be submitted through www.publicartist.org. No email or mailed applications will be accepted. Selection Information |
Selection Process Applications will be reviewed by a selection committee to ensure that each application is legible, complete, and meets all requirements. The pool will be narrowed to three finalists who will be asked to created a proposal. Selection committee will recommend commission to ECISD Board of Trustees for final approval. |
Selection Criteria Selection Criteria: Artwork will be selected based on the following criteria: Artist merit and technical expertise Demonstrated successful, innovative and effective approach to public art projects of a similar scope Ability to execute a public art project in a culturally rich and complex area Express interest in creating artwork for the opportunities presented by this request for qualifications |
