Call Summary
Southstar Communities seeks an artist or artist team to design and create a site-specific sculpture for the entrance to a new 600 acre community on the Southside of San Antonio, VIDA San Antonio. The commissioned artwork will embrace the energetic, and culturally vibrant history and future of the Southside in a way that is consistent with the branding and mission of VIDA San Antonio.
 
Budget Description
The budget for this project is $100,000. This budget includes artist fees and all costs associated with the design, engineering, fabrication, permitting, delivery, and installation of the artwork. Finalists selected from this RFQ will receive a $500 stipend to develop a proposal to share with the VIDA art Committee.
 
Project Description
Developed by SouthStar Communities, VIDA San Antonio is a new mixed-use community featuring new homes, apartments, townhomes, shops, and restaurants located adjacent to the Texas A&M San Antonio Campus. The Mission of SouthStar Communities is to create and establish an inclusive and accessible art program that:
• Celebrates the cultural vibrancy of San Antonio’s Southside
• Creates spaces for visitors, neighbors, and students to connect and explore
Reflect a responsible use of resources The commission of the VIDA Main Sculpture for Southstar Communities will keep in line with the mission statement and goals outlined above. Please review approved materials, selection criteria, and the location description provided below.
 
Artwork Goals
SouthStar Communities strives to commission art and artworks that fosters a welcoming and inclusive environment for all that live at and visit VIDA. The site-specific sculpture must be an aesthetically pleasing focal point for VIDA residents and visitors. The artwork must consider the safety of visitors and residents and should be easy to clean and maintain.
 
Artwork Location Description
The artwork will be located directly off the entrance of the VIDA community. Additional information and materials will be provided to the winning artist(s).
 
Site History
Located in the heart of San Antonio’s Southside, VIDA is a new community where wellness, education, public art and public spaces blend together to create a vibrant living experience for residents and guests.
 
Eligibility
This project is open to all artists and artist teams, 21 years and older, residing in Texas. Professional artists with experience completing projects of similar size and budget are encouraged to apply. All applicants, regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, origin or disability, will be considered. Please see selection criteria below.

Work examples: 5 - 10
Artist Statement: 800 word maximum
Letter of Interest: 800 word maximum
Highlight familiarity with the area if possible.
References: 3
 
Artists are allowed to apply in teams.
Artists applying as a team must split the allotted number of work examples between themselves.
 
Selection Information
Selection Process
The VIDA Committee will review applications received through this RFQ and award an artist or artist team. The selected artist should commit to a least 3 rounds of revision that might be requested by the architect and design team to conform to pre-existing design conditions. The VIDA Committee discourages artists from mailing or hand-delivering any physical material that has not been requested by the committee. Any material received, solicited or unsolicited, will not be returned to the artist. The VIDA Committee reserves the right to accept or rejects any and all responses received, or commission an artist through another process should responses to this RFQ prove unsatisfactory.
