| Call Summary University Health’s SaludArte: Art of Healing program seeks an artist or artist team to artfully enhance with original designs selected locations in our four buildings listed below. This general RFQ will select two finalists for each project to then compete for the final award and commission. Budget is for design fees only. All fabrication and installation costs are incurred by the client, University Health. Designs will be printed on wall film and films for glass and incorporated into patient room footwalls and public and family waiting areas. The commissioned artwork will thoughtfully respond to this unique context in a way consistent with the mission of University Health. |
| Budget Description Retama Community Hospital: $150,000Palo Alto Community Hospital: $150,000 • Four artists to be engaged to design for both community hospitals • Two artist & mentor teams of two artists will also be considered Vida Public Health Clinic: $150,000 • One artist will be selected Wheatley Public Health Clinic: $50,000 • One artist will be selected and or a community group Please note: fees are for design and any revisions requested only. The fabrication and installation costs are built into the construction budget. |
| Project Description The mission of University Health is to improve the good health of the community through high-quality, compassionate care, innovation, education and discovery. We are leading the way to be one of the nation’s most trusted health institutions. These community hospitals and public health clinics are reaching into new areas of Bexar County and the city of San Antonio and adding over 1.5 million square feet in new medical services which will provide much-needed facilities to meet the needs of our growing community and region. | Artwork Goals University Health and its SaludArte: Art of Healing program strive to create and commission unique artworks that reflect aesthetic and technical quality and foster a welcoming and uplifting environment for healing. The design enhancement wall films and any original artwork that are thoughtfully integrated into the buildings during the construction will be used in patient rooms, exterior walls, hallways, elevator lobby and waiting rooms. These designs will follow the environmental graphic visual cues found on our resource page and reflect the values and history of the communities we serve. They serve as important factors in positive distraction and as an uplifting focal point for patients. Artists are encouraged to review these cues and, if selected as finalists, will present their proposal to the art steering committee early in the new year. |
| Artwork Location Description The location of these wall films will be in patient rooms, footwalls, hallways, waiting areas and elevator lobbies. At VIDA Public Health Clinic, there is an exterior design enhancement component as well as interior wall areas. |
| Site History University Health is committed to meeting the needs of our growing community and strives to ensure access for the high-quality, affordable care community members need and deserve. Many of these new health care clinics and community hospital locations were selected due to the needs of these areas. These University Health community capital improvement projects will be places where families and children of all ages will be surrounded with the experts and technology to provide the highest level of compassionate and quality care. | Eligibility The project is open to all domestic and international artists and artist teams age 21 years and older Professional artists with experience completing projects of this type and size are encouraged to apply and possibly team up with a younger artist as a mentor to help them gain experience in the public art field. All applicants will be considered regardless of race, sex, religion, nationality, origin or disability. Please see criteria section listed below. |

| Selection Information |
| Selection Process The University Health Steering Committee will be reviewing all RFP finalists that have been drawn from these initial RFQs posted Sunday, Sept. 1. If you are selected as a design enhancement finalist after the calls close on Friday, Nov. 15, you will be notified within two weeks. A request will be made to create a proposal using the site elevations provided to you and a date for these to be reviewed by our group. We hope to have this decided before the end of the year or early 2025. Names will be posted on the PublicArtist website (https://www.publicartist.org/universityhealth) as soon as the finalists are selected. Please do not contact us. |
| Selection Criteria Responses to this RFQ will be evaluated based on the following criteria: Artist has a strong body of work, technical skillset and merit Strong professional qualifications working in large scale public art programs Demonstrated ability through references to work on time and budget Demonstrated ability to work with a diverse team of professionals, Executive Curator, architects, engineers and construction teams Compatibility with the mission of University Health and the goals outlined in this RFQ Once awarded, the artist must: Be free to get started right away in January 2025 Commit to possible three rounds of revisions Follow and convey the spirit of the SaludArte: Art of Healing program |

Announcement of award winners expected mid to late February 2025 Finalists not awarded the commission will receive $500.00 for their proposal |
